How to Become a Pilot: Your Journey to the Skies at Tõutsi Flight School

The dream of freedom and the view that only unfolds from the edge of the clouds is closer than you think. Tõutsi Aeroclub’s flight school was created to turn this dream into a reality within a safe, professional, and inspiring environment. Our training combines modern technology with South Estonian aviation traditions, offering you the best possible start for a career in aviation or as a recreational pilot.

Step One: The Discovery Flight
Before diving into intensive study, we always recommend taking a "check" or discovery flight. This is your chance to sit in the captain's seat, take hold of the controls, and feel the aircraft's response in your own hands. It is the moment when many realize that the sky is indeed their true element. Our instructors will introduce you to basic maneuvers and the logic of aircraft handling, giving you the confidence to proceed with your training.

Theory Training: Knowledge that Creates Safety
Flying is a precision science. At our flight school, you will complete a comprehensive theoretical course that provides the necessary foundation for air navigation and decision-making. The course covers nine essential areas, including air law, meteorology, navigation, aircraft technology, and human performance. Training is conducted flexibly so that you can acquire knowledge alongside your daily work while receiving direct support from our experienced instructors.

Health and Aviation Medicine
Safety is the top priority in aviation. Before your first solo flight, you must pass a medical check-up with a certified aviation medical examiner. Depending on your chosen license, you will need either a LAPL or a Class 2 medical certificate. This is a standard health check that confirms your readiness to operate an aircraft.

Flight Training on a Brand New Aircraft
The jewel of Tõutsi flight school is our brand-new Evektor SportStar RTC. This is a modern, safe, and exceptionally capable training aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art avionics. During your training, you will hone your skills over the rolling hills of South Estonia, which makes you a more skilled and precise pilot than practicing over flat terrain. You will learn take-offs, landings, cross-country navigation to other cities, and how to handle critical situations.

Choosing Your Path: LAPL or PPL?
With us, you can choose between two primary license types, depending on your desires and future plans.

LAPL (Light Aircraft Pilot License) is aimed at those who wish to fly for a hobby within European borders. It is a more economical and faster route to the sky, requiring a minimum of 30 flight hours. A LAPL allows you to pilot single-engine aircraft weighing up to 2,000 kg, carrying up to three passengers. It is the perfect choice for Sunday flights and traveling with family.

PPL (Private Pilot License) is an internationally recognized license that serves as the necessary foundation for those who wish to advance further in aviation or eventually become commercial pilots. The training is more extensive, requiring at least 45 flight hours. With a PPL, you have no weight or passenger number restrictions (depending on the aircraft type), and you can later add ratings such as night flying or instrument flight (IFR).

The Finale: Examination and Wings
Once the flight hours are completed and the theory exams are passed, a check-ride with a Transport Administration examiner awaits you. Upon successful completion, you will be issued your license, granting you the right to be the master of your own sky.

At Tõutsi flight school, you don’t just get a piece of paper; you join an aviation family. After graduation, you can look forward to our club's group flight expeditions, technical seminars, and a supportive community that shares your passion.
